Food Processing Industries
Type of Industry: Food processing: 6,000 – 10,000 lbs/hour of cooking product, 15-20 minute cook time.
Details of equipment: Spiral steam cooker. Details of original drive: High torque required. 1 RPM output. 100,000 in lbs. Hydraulic motor driven, hydraulic driven 3 – 4 HP Details of Dorris replacement drive: 415TR250 4/0 How has the Dorris drive performed, enhanced, simplified, condensed, etc. the customer’s overall drive package? We replaced Hub City on small drives. We replaced Auburn Power Wheels on large drives (Planetaries). Yes to all of the above. Looking to design our 507 into next larger cooker in near future.
Type of Industry: Food processing
Details of equipment: Mixer for combining ingredients to make breakfast cereal. Details of original drive: 10 HP, 32 RPM, inline parallel shaft reducer with a chain drive. Details of Dorris replacement drive: 315TR20 reducer with a special 2 7/16" bushing and a 3MM motor mount. How has the Dorris drive simplified, condensed, etc. the customer’s overall drive package? It took some length out of the package. By going with a shaft mount, the food processing company could use a belt drive which combined with an oversized gear drive will handle shock loading better. Why did Dorris get the order? The engineer had previous good experiences with the quality of Dorris. One bushing simplified mounting and required less shaft length. Dorris was able to provide an AutoCad drawing via email, simplifying the engineer’s design work
Type of Industry: Food processing
Details of equipment: Steam peeler for potatoes. Details of original drive: Falk 20:1 Base Mount. 30 HP input. Motor/Reducer direct coupled to drive shaft. Details of Dorris replacement drive: 415TR20 with custom 3 11/16" bushing How has the Dorris drive simplified, condensed, etc. the customer’s overall drive package? Shaft mounting allowed the customer to create additional room for another line to be installed. The original reducer interfered with installation of that additional line. Why did Dorris get the order? Dorris was willing to manufacture a custom bushing to match the customer’s existing shaft dimension. Additional cost was well below the cost of tearing down machine and re-machining shaft to industry standards. Customer was able to use machine while Dorris manufactured bushing, with only downtime being tear-out of old motor/reducer and installation of Dorris unit. Peeler would have been out of service for two to three weeks with competitors units.
Type of Industry: Flour Mill
Details of equipment: Screw conveyor. Details of original drive: 1.5 HP, 25:1 Ratio Details of Dorris replacement drive: Replaced original belt drive with c-faced unit. How has the Dorris drive simplified, condensed, etc. the customer’s overall drive package? No belts to change. No assembly time. Why did Dorris get the order? 1. C-Face 2. Excellent delivery
Type of Industry: Pet Food Processor
Details of equipment: Screw conveyors for metering dry and moist ingredients into blending process. Gearboxes designed for Class III service for round-the-clock operation. Details of original drive: Nord Screw Conveyor Drive Snuggler design with C-Face Input. SK3282 rated for 5 HP, 80 RPM output, 180TC input flange. The Nord boxes were failing due to poor drive shaft design. The 2" drive shaft was machined down to 1-1/4" to fit into the quill. The machined shoulder on the shaft created a weak point and lead to fracture in the shaft. There are over 120 drives of this style in the facility. Details of Dorris replacement drive: Dorris Model TLC Screw Conveyor 203TLC20, c-face screw conveyor drive with CEMA adapter, packing gland kit, shaft kit, and coupling. Seven total units sold on initial order for direct replacement. How has the Dorris drive simplified, condensed, etc. the customer’s overall drive package? The Dorris TLC was able to fit into a tight envelope making replacement easy. The Dorris screw conveyor drive provides a sound shaft design with no inherent weak points that could lead to premature shaft failure. The customer is pleased with the TLC gearbox design, c-face input and rugged construction. They are confident that the Dorris box will perform as designed in this application and they will replace Nord drives with Dorris as they continue to fail. Why did Dorris get the order? The Dorris TLC met all of the design criteria leading to improvement in the pet food processing operation. Price was higher than original drive, but the gearbox design was the leading factor in the customer’s purchase of Dorris product. The distributor was able to sell the end user on the functions and features of the TLC box.
